POSIBLENG maharap ang isang abogado at dating Ilonggo political aspirant Zafiro Lauron sa disbarment makaraang magpakalat umano ng peke at mapanirang-puring akusasyon laban sa pamilya ng Panay Electric Company (PECO) kaugnay sa umano’y offshore bank accounts na sinasabing para sa laundering money.

Kinastigo rin si Lauren dahil sa umano’y ginagawa nitong “fishing expedition” laban sa pamilya Cacho para masira ang kredibilidad ng nasabing pamilya.

Si Lauron, kumandidato subalit nabigo sa ilang pagtatangka na makakuha ng political seat sa Iloilo, ay nagmamay-ari ng maliit na legal firm sa lungsod na may kinalaman sa debt collection. Ang kompanya ay nauna nang binatikos sa social media dahil sa umano’y mga pagtatangka na lokohin ang mga Ilonggo sa pagpapanggap na nangongolekta ng bills para sa mga kompanya na tulad ng Globe Telecom.

“Lauron is rehashing an old and long disproven issue. The accusation that either PECO or the Cacho family has any current investments in the British Virgin Islands is categorically false,” pahayag ni Divina Law Partner Atty. Estrella Elamparo. “Given the timing of his so-called investigation, where Ilonggos are suffering from an outrageous spate of power interruptions, it’s clear as day that he has an agenda.”

Ayon kay PECO Head of Public Engagement and Government Affairs Marcelo Cacho, malinaw na “fishing expedition” din ang ginagawa ni Lauron.
“For whatever reason, Lauron is digging up things that have already been resolved just to try to put us in a bad light. He’s calling for an investigation to look for something that’s not even there,” ani Cacho.
Ibinunyag pa ni Cacho na si Lauron ay mas matagal na nagpa-practice sa Maynila kaya’t malamang na salat ito sa kaalaman sa mga totoong kaganapan sa Iloilo.
Ayon kay Elamparo, ang pahayag ni Lauron ay lumabag sa tatlong rules sa ilalim ng Canon of Professional Responsibility for Lawyers.
Aniya, sa ilalim ng Rules 1.01 at 1.03 ng Canon 1, “A lawyer shall not engage in unlawful, dishonest, immoral or deceitful conduct” and “shall not, for any corrupt motive or interest, encourage any suit or proceeding or delay any man’s cause.”
Bukod dito, isinasaad ng Rule 7,03 ng Canon 7 na, “A lawyer shall not engage in conduct that adversely reflects on his fitness to practice law, nor shall he whether in public or private life, behave in a scandalous manner to the discredit of the legal profession.”
“As officers of the court, we are duty-bound to conduct ourselves with integrity. Such deviation from this warrants the disbarment of any lawyer, especially when they choose to defame someone with ill-intent,” diin ni Elamparo.
Ang PECO ang dating nangangasiwa sa power distribution utilities sa Iloilo City hanggang biglang mag-take over ang More Electric and Power Corporation (MORE) sa kabila ng naunang court order na tumitiyak na ipagpapatuloy ng PECO ang pag-o-operate sa panahon ng transition period.
