THE official campaign period has yet to begin, but the mudslinging has already started. Leading the charge in this political circus is none other than Ako OFW party-list, an organization that claims to advocate for the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). It is instead embroiled in infighting, deception, and political maneuvering at the expense of the very people they claim to represent.
While other party lists are focusing on platforms and legislative agenda, Ako OFW has resorted to underhanded tactics, hurling baseless accusations at rivals in a desperate bid for relevance. This is the kind of politicking that disrespects the intelligence of voters and betrays the very principles of public service. Rather than presenting concrete solutions for OFWs, they have chosen to engage in a smear campaign, exposing their own desperation and lack of genuine advocacy.
What’s worse, Ako OFW is itself riddled with controversy. There are currently two factions claiming to be the legitimate representation of the party-list, both using the same number in an apparent attempt to confuse voters. This internal division speaks volumes about their credibility, if they can’t even manage their own house, how can they claim to fight for OFWs on a national scale?
But the real scandal lies in their nominees. One of them has been identified as a known protector of unscrupulous recruitment agencies, the very entities responsible for countless cases of abuse and exploitation of OFWs. This raises a glaring question: How can someone with ties to the recruitment industry claim to advocate for the rights of OFWs? It is a blatant conflict of interest that should alarm every overseas worker and their families.
The other nominee, a former OWWA board of trustee, has been accused of leveraging OWWA’s resources for his personal gain and campaign. If true, this is a gross abuse of power, one that underscores how so-called “OFW advocates” are using the plight of migrant workers for their own ambitions. OWWA’s funds are meant to assist distressed OFWs, not bankroll political campaigns. If this individual had truly worked for the benefit of OFWs during his tenure, he wouldn’t need to resort to exploiting government resources for political advantage.
OFWs who sacrifice so much for their families and our country deserve leaders who will fight for them with integrity, not politicians who use them as stepping stones to power. Ako OFW party-list is proving, even before the campaign officially starts, that they are more interested in political games than real advocacy. Voters must remain vigilant and reject candidates who play dirty even before the real battle begins.
The OFW community needs genuine representation, not another group of self-serving politicians masquerading as advocates. Come Election Day, let’s make sure we choose leaders who will uplift, not exploit, our modern-day heroes.
